Privacy Policy

This policy covers the Rise app for iPhone and this website. Rise is made by Samuel Ngai in Australia (“we”, “us”). If you have a question about it, email sam@lumiose.au.

What the app keeps, and where

To show your progress, Rise keeps a few things on your iPhone:

• which readings and Bible chapters you have marked as read, and when;
• how long you spent reading each day;
• your text size setting.

These are stored only in the app’s own storage on your device. They are never sent to us or to anyone else, and we have no way to see them. Rise does not use the internet at all: the Bible text and every reading plan are built into the app.

Your iPhone includes this data in its backups (iCloud Backup, or a backup to your computer) according to your own settings. Those backups are handled by Apple, or by your computer, not by us. Deleting Rise deletes its data from your iPhone.

Widgets

Rise’s Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show your next reading, your streak and your recent reading days. To do this, the app writes a small summary file to a folder on your iPhone that only Rise and its widgets can read (an “App Group”). The file never leaves your device. Keep in mind that anyone who can see your Lock Screen can see what a Lock Screen widget shows.

What Rise doesn’t do

• No accounts or sign-in.
• No analytics, advertising or tracking, and no third-party code that does these things.
• No access to your contacts, location, photos, camera or microphone.
• No selling or sharing of information, because we don’t have any.

Apple: TestFlight and the App Store

Rise is distributed through Apple. Apple handles downloads, and any purchases, under Apple’s Privacy Policy. Apple may share some information with us:

• TestFlight (beta testing): if you test Rise, Apple tells us the name and email address you were invited with (if you were invited by email) and basic facts such as your device model, iOS version, and how many times the app was opened or crashed. If you send feedback or a screenshot from TestFlight, we receive it along with your contact details.
• Crash reports and statistics: if you allowed your iPhone to share analytics with app developers (Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Analytics & Improvements), Apple may send us crash reports and statistics that don’t identify you.

We use this only to fix problems and improve Rise. We don’t combine it with anything else or pass it on.

If you contact us

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use it only to reply to you. Our email is provided by Microsoft 365, which may store messages on servers outside Australia. Ask us and we’ll delete your emails.

This website

This website uses no cookies, analytics or tracking. Like any web server, our web host (Namecheap) may briefly keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the pages requested, for security and to keep the site running.

Children

Rise is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no personal information, it collects none from children either.

Australian Privacy Principles

We aim to handle information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You can ask us what information we hold about you (in practice, only emails you have sent us or TestFlight details from Apple) and ask us to correct or delete it. We’ll reply within 30 days.

Changes to this policy

If Rise changes what it does with information, for example by adding iCloud sync, we will update this page and the date at the top before the new version is released.
